Our core curriculum consists of:
Healthy Living/Life Skills
Students learn to decode words, develop fluency, increase vocabulary, and use comprehension strategies through our reading curriculum.They are exposed to literary genres such as poetry, fiction, nonfiction, drama, and digital media. An emphasis is placed on guided reading through our Reading Mastery literacy and phonics program.
Through the use of the Zearn Mathematics program, students develop necessary skills that allow them to be problem solvers.Intentional focus on foundational skills, such as identifying shapes and patterns, understanding addition, subtraction, multiplying, dividing, exponents, fractions, and data analysis.
Students study nature and the physical world by testing, experimenting, and measuring to gain knowledge of scientific concepts through the use of the Core Knowledge Listening and Learning Strand curriculum.Students are encouraged to develop their auditory processing skills, as well as application of content knowledge through the use of the program.
Through our social studies curriculum, students are able to better understand the community and the world through use of the Core Knowledge Listening and Learning Strand curriculum.Students study history, government, geography, citizenship, and other cultures.Students also learn to appreciate their role in society, to identify the importance of cooperation, and to know their rights and responsibilities as effective leaders in the community.
Healthy Living/Life Skills
Students participate in daily healthy living/life skills classes, which focus specifically on healthy living, self care habits, nutrition, character development, and vocational skills in order to ensure that all students are well prepared for life after their school experiences.
Physical Education, Art, and Music
Sonnenberg School also offers physical education instruction daily, with a special emphasis on developing the gross motor skills of our students. We emphasize the importance of fitness and health and teach skills that foster a love for being active. Art and Music are also integrated throughout the school day as a part of our curriculum in each grade level.
